…movies like The 40-Year-Old Virgin, The Hangover and the recent Horrible Bosses, all of which I enjoyed a lot, depend mostly on the actors’ performances. The funny stuff isn’t on paper. The problem is such movies fail when you don’t enjoy a particular comedian, since his or her delivery makes or breaks it. By contrast, you can sit down and read the Airplane! script for an hour and just laugh your ass off.

Yes. That’s the difference. I need strong, clever writing. Wordplay. I want to be able to laugh at something every time I watch it because inevitably I can’t remember every little thing the writers wrote. Something that I have to figure out for myself is funny. No obvious behavior from the actors that says “What I am currently doing or saying is hilarious” The West Wing did this, and it wasn’t even supposed to be a comedy. Parks and Recreation does this now. I have watched a few of these three times now. “You embarrassed me in front of The Douche” |
